Final Reflection
Posted on July 19th, 2007 at 1:42 pm by deborahmtwomey and
This week has reminded me how overwhelmed my students must feel at times but yet exhilerated when they “get it”!
My expectations for new knowledge have been exceeded.
What I know (but not mastered!) now that I didn’t know on MON.:
how to blog
what a widget is
about wikis
itunes
iphoto
webkinz–I can’t wait to use them!
what a second life means
how to move images in google
fanfiction
little but important stuff like F9-11
great new websites
Even though I feel I need additional instruction about many things introduced, I enjoyed feeling like I am more “in the loop” of the latest technology.
Alice—-you’re amazing!! You are such a wealth of information!
I would have liked to work in “pods” with a person with more techno. ability available to give support to those of us less abled. Also, more time to practice one thing presented at a time would have been helpful to me.

I am like Pru Stanley in Seal Island School because I don’t want Ms. A. to leave us. I know she will have fun teaching kids in Peru but I will miss her. Can’t we do something to have her change her plans?

Listen to the Natives

I felt this article overall was bashing teachers.
A good idea from the article though was to have teachers ask students to share what they have been doing on the web that would engage the students. The teachers and students would work collaboratively.
I agree that if teachers don’t engage students in more technology, the students will be bored.
Having guest teachers online is a great idea that can also be helpful to districts’ budgets in terms of fewer field trips.

What an interesting study!
I found the following points to be the most interesting:
Boys are more likely than girls to have forms of media in their bedrooms.
I wonder if this is because many boys are “quite active” and desire the constant interactive stimulation.
Parental rules pay off with time consumption of media for children 8-18.
This appears to be a no brainer to me but one which many parents have tremendous difficulty enforcing.
Poor grades were a direct correlation to the time the students spent playing video games.
Another no brainer!
Schools introduce the computers but they are being used at home primarily for entertainment.
According to other articles we have read, it sounds like teachers should and are, changing that.
Students are becoming media multitaskers.
This is definitely happening.
Billions of Bytes–The Overconnecteds

I enjoyed this article as I have experienced many of the scenerios raising two boys who are now in their twenties. I went from emailing to daily IMs when my sons were in college. I gradually learned some IM “lingo” but will not understand how they can have several IMs going at once and still continue to talk to me because I type slowly. I then think of my grandmother who used to play 40+ bingo cards at once and think a generation of multitasking has been skipped!
Billions of Bytes—Imagining the Internet

One blogger wrote about the future of the internet: “A new role for teachers will emerge”. How true! The KidZone/Teachers section of this article is very interesting! I liked the timeline of the past and future communication tools. It gives a good perspective of time in a kid friendly format.
Billions Of Bytes–Wired But Not Web 2.0

This article surveyed adults about their use of gadgetry. It stated that 49% occasionally use gadgetry. There was no breakdown of ages in the adult survey. Such statements should have factual data to back up claims. I believe that younger adults use more gadgets than older adults. I would have liked to seen a study with hard data to back up my suspicions.
reaction to how to comment Blogs are not the Enemy

This was a very interesting article explaining that bloggings are conversations that invite feedback.
I have witnessed the author’s comments with threating comments and frequent “hits” on people’s blogs as I read the Portland Press Herald’s blogs regarding articles which raise conflict. Some people are frequent bloggers with a set agenda; ready to pounce on those of differing opinions.
It is quite scary to read of death threats. Students need to be aware of the realities of posting anything on the web.
